A fluorescent lamp or fluorescent tube is a gas-discharge lamp that uses electricity to excite mercury vapor. The excited mercury atoms produce short-wave ultraviolet light that then causes a phosphor to fluoresce, producing visible light. It is a low pressure mercury vapour lamp. Due to low pressure, the lamp is in the form of a long tube which is internally coated with a fluorescent powder. The tube contains a small amount of mercury and a small quantity of argon gas at a pressure of 2.5 mm of mercury.
A choke is connected in series with the tube filament. It provides a voltage impulse for starting the lamp and acts as a ballast later on when the lamp is running.
The filament is connected to a starter switch, which is a small glow lamp with bimetal strip at the electrodes, The glow type starter is a voltage operated device, Glass bulb filled with a mixture of helium and hydrogen.
